Prananarayana (AD 1633-1665), Gold, 9.09 g, Mohur, Nagari legend Shri Shri / Shiva Charan / kamala madhu / karasya on obv, Shri Shri / Prananara / yana Bhupa / sya Shake / 753 on rev, Nepalese Era 753 (AD 1632) (Bose# D1). Very Fine+, 2nd Known Coin, the first being in the State Museum, Lucknow. Great Rarity!
The gold coin of Cooch Behar is an important piece of history of North-East India. The only known coin in the Lucknow Museum has date 669. This is the second known coin of this ruler and the only known coin in any private hands. The new date 753 is also important on this coin, as it is recoreded in the Nepalese Samvat Era. This is the sole example wherein the Nepalese era is used outside of Nepal. This seems to have happened because of the marriage alliance of Prananarayana’s sister Rupamati Devi married to Pratap Malla of Kathamandu. The best authentic work on the subject is by S.K. Bose, The Commercial Coinage of Koch Kingdom, Kolkata 2013(page 29 for further details).
