AUC#66 - Lot 1 : Terracotta
Ancient
Pot Sherd of Malwa Region with an Ujjayini Symbol (c. 150-200 BC), Terracotta. A piece of terracotta pottery 68.69 g, 55x65 mm with the thickness of 20 mm has a bold Ujjain symbol, usually found on copper coins of Ujjayini from Malwa region. The graffity has deeply engraved with clear markings of the famous ancient symbol. Interestingly, this so-called Ujjain symbol has been named as Ujjain or Ujjayini symbol mainly based on the fact that this symbol was found on copper coins of post-Maurya period in the Malwa region of Madhya Pradesh. However, we do not have any clues regarding its original name or its relio-political significance. Nevertheless, the find of such a symbol on a piece of terracotta is rare and worth collecting.
